Sathya Sai Spiritual

Education

Sathya Sai Spiritual Education - The Sathya Sai Organisation has approximately 36 centres throughout New Zealand. In most of these Centres Sathya Sai Spiritual Education classes are conducted. These classes cater for three age groups; 6 to 8, 9 to 10 and 11 to 12. The aim of these classes is to awaken the inherent divinity within, which is the birthright of every human being.

This is done through the use of five proven teaching techniques of: thought for the day, stories, values songs, activities and silent sitting. Click here to learn more about these teaching techniques.

Thought for the Day

Here is some food for thought - these off the cuff comments could create lively discussion in a classroom.

"Is our character our fate and our destiny? "

"It is not living that is important, it is living rightly."

"Listening is wanting to hear!"

And my personal favourite

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, some have greatness thrust upon them,

...... and then there are the rest of us."

Activities

Activities are my favourite part of the class it is always such a lively and energetic time the room always seems to be brighter, well that is unless you have an activity that everyone just does not want to do. Have you ever had one of those activities? Well fear not - I have been scouring the shops and have found that books filled with activities abound. Whitcoulls and Paper Plus both have a good supply but check out Jaberwocky and other educational bookstores also. It will save all that worry about what to give the class to do.

If you want a medium energy game that will build team work. Try the back to back race. It is great fun and suits adults and children alike. For larger classes split the class into teams and make it into a relay.

Well that is all from me for now, enjoy and remember to send those emails through! Oops! I can almost hear you screaming "well how do you play this back to back thing". Here are the instructions.

This game tests co-ordination and team work and is not suitable for preschool children.

Mark two lines on the ground (at least 6 metres apart - minimum) these are the starting and turning lines . If the race is to be a straight race have each pair stand back to back and link their arms together. Line the pairs up at the starting line and yell ready, set, go. The pairs move towards the turning line running in whatever fashion they find quickest, their arms must remain linked at all times. The team that returns the fastest is the winner. This can be varied by making it into a relay (warning this can become an extremely noisy game).

It is interesting to see how some people get around height and strength differences. This game is fun and noisy and suits a wide variety of ages - I would rate it at about 8/10!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stories and Ideas

The I.S.S.E. is always being asked to produce more lesson plan books or books of suitable stories. My reply to this is why reinvent the wheel. There are so many great books out there that it seems to me to be a waste of valuable time to reproduce yet another book - as a group we need to be innovative and resourceful.

I can already hear you saying, look just help us out here, but to be perfectly honest every book I have read always has a positive side to it, it is up to you as the teacher to encourage the student to look for the positive. This is also a great life lesson for the student, it teaches them optimism and encourages them to look for the positive in a given situation.

One helpful hint I can offer is keep to current books and characters the class can relate to, it is no use introducing Brer Rabbit when the class is only interested in Ninja Turtles.

Recommendation

I have used a book called "Finders Keepers" for a lesson plan and found that the children associated with the characters and the story line reinforced positive behaviour, while dealing with an everyday situation.

If you have any books that you may like to recommend to other teachers please email me and I will post them on this page.

Web Watch

There are some wonderful websites out there that provide all types of educational information. One I have looked at recently is Tki.org, a N.Z. educational website - check it out! It is full of useful ideas.

Take care and I hope to hear from you soon.
